A Fun road trip a family takes in Malaysia and the interesting facts they stir up on a 2 hours drive

Here is a survey from a Columbia University professor on vacation with his family in Malaysia.

He decided to take a road trip on one of the most beautiful stretch of highway from north of the country to the capital.

The plan is to drive the 2 hours drive from a small city called Ipoh in the state of Perak to the Capital of the country, Kuala Lumpur.

So to make things fun, the professor stir up an observation game for his 9 and 11 years old boy to play with while on the road.

Here is the report from the prof family.

The car driving seat is on the right hand side, and the stick shift is in the middle of the car on the left of the driver. Need some time to get used to. All cars go on the left hand side and the speed lane is on the right. The measurement for speed and distance is in Kilometer and not miles, that’s about 2.45 for every mile. And the speed limit for the Highway (almost the same as freeway, only it’s not free and the ground is raised to avoid flooding and improve water flow on the road.)

The initial plan is to drive the 210km stretch of highway from Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur.

We took one pee stop. Encounter one annoying driver that park right behind our car to wait for his lovely wife, even when we honk the horn a dozen times and there’s plenty of space in front of the car to move to let us leave. He insists on staying that 2 meter distance to shorten the wife’s trip from the toilet to the car.

Ok, one good thing about the trip is that, this is the greenest road trip that I’ve ever taken, all the tropical forest, counted 5 palm field, 3 rubber field, 16 over head bridges, and 6 under road bridges, one beautiful water fall (we later find out that’s the only one visible on the highway.). there’s about 16 opening between the forest, with housing area in between them. Beautiful.

Half of the trip is a 6 lanes highway. So we are pretty comfortable speeding our way all the way. We almost max out 110km/hr the whole way.

Now the fun part is that my sons have been really busy the whole trip, because the driving here is fun to encounter, it is almost a pleasant drive. And my family has the best fun counting the following statistic.

65 cars pass us while we are at top speed (meaning all of them are speeding), we receive around 16 flashes and 36 tail gating when we are on the fast lane at max speed. 5 cars decided to swift into the left lane to pass us over and speed across the front of us to the right fast lane when we are at max speed in the middle lane. Great maneuver but dangerous when one almost hit a motorcycle passing us on the right lane (bear in mind we are still at max speed, which means even the cyclist is speeding.) around 25 of the car passes us above high speed passes us on the fast lane when we are in the middle lane. Still it’s speeding.

We encounter 15 buses and 13 trucks, 20 of those are going so slow I think that there should be a minimal limit to the speed on highway. Anyway, that causes about a 5km of jam on the road. Which clearly those trucks are unable to speed because there’s a slope and their overweight stuff on the truck is dragging them. Amazingly only 5 of them spew black smoke all the way. (a warning from the car rental agency, they advice to avoid driving behind a truck because almost all of them spew smelly black smoke and the smell would be unpleasant to be behind them.

More fun is that there’s about a dozen of road kill from normal dogs and cats, to baboon and lizard, and at one point there’s a snake and pangolin. And about a dozen of vehicles broke down on the emergency lane.

Alright besides the excitement of being flash constantly and tailgated. The whole trip is pretty easy, as the roadway are wide and pretty flat.

Of the most exciting thing that my sons found is that there’s this gang of bikers that ride in pack of 30 something. And on auto combusted motorcycle on the way out of the rest station.

We also saw more than a dozen of BMW and Mercedes that give no mercy at flashing at us whenever they come over when we are on the fast lane. (I guess good cars does run faster, and less prone to be in Accident?!! Rather create one.) and 6 Ferraris and 3 Chryslers sped over us in no time at all. Excitement scream from my sons. All the wows.

We are actually driving a small local made can called SAGA. Pretty easy to drive, the space is modest, it does get cramp up at the back if my sons were older, there’s less leg space at the back then expected when me and my wife have to back our front seat for comfortable driving.

All in all the road trip is a success one. Due to good planning, we don’t get to watch a movie (my sons is not so happy about that.) before our dinner gala at one of the shopping mall convention centre due to the miscalculated distance and ETA.

One small notes, we watch about every movies they have in their Cineplex the next couple of days, including the Europe film fest specials. One reason is that one of my son is a gaming freak (non-of it contributed by me) and the other is a movie geek (I admit due to my own academic teaching habit). The ticket here for a premiere class seats is just 9 RM, that’s about 3 dollars fantastic price for adult and children are half price, one strange thing is that the children seats are calculated by heights not age, both my boys have passed the limits and treated as adult, which they are happy about and we did comply since the price is just ridiculously cheap. And we get to let them enjoy some European art movie with all the sexually sensitive part censored (due to local cultural rules), and we actually watch a pretty smoothly re-edited version of the movie. Without us needing to discuss some of the uncomfortable sexual topic at their age and able to enjoy a pretty meaningful movie….. clean.

Chinese visit to family ancester's grave to pay respect today!!

Today is the day that Chinese start exercising one of their annual ritual. It’s solemn and peaceful in a way.

A surprise is that I encounter a small snake in the process, he slither right under my thigh while I was doing my work sitting.

Well, the day is of course common for all Chinese around the world. It’s the week that everyone would find time to visit their ancestor grave and clean their compound and pay respect to them.

Chinese cemetery doesn’t accept government grant nor money from charity or family members for up keeping. But they do spray pesticite to kill of all wee for easy cleaning in the season.

Anyway, this is the one year that my family will all be here for the ritual. and it’s great to discover by exercise regime have finally gotten me some improvement on my health. Oh did I mention that the Chinese have to make their grave look like a small grand mansion on a hill slope? So it’s a heck of a place to clean up, with all the grass and weed and mud (if the day before it rains).

So after all the burning of incense and stuff. We’d have to climb back up to our cars. Hahaha! A really great workout that my brother suffer a heat stroke from lack of sleep. Haha!!!

Oh the best thing is that after the strenuous workout, i still have to drive a 2 hours drive to the capital for one of my old friend's wedding to night.

Double Double happiness!!!

tea party favorite Michele Bachmann for President, is America staging a revolution!!!?

tea party favorite Michele Bachmann, is sounding her bid to Presidency. So will there be another new congresswoman, GOP, Tea Party to be the first woman president?! Sorry Palin?!

We'll see. does America needs a debate for debate sake?!

Is Obama really doing badly?!

Sure today the searches for Michele Bachmann will spike. but is the buzz worthy for the Presidency?

But the facts is, the focus is on who the GOP will send out to fight against Obama?

The temperature is lukewarm at the moment, not a bad time for GOP to make a good case that they can do better.

does this means the Democrat will not be dishing out any candidate other than Obama this time?!

it seems like at the moment that the fight the Obama against the world.

Surprise, surprise. American Idol Top 10 is not in!!!! still top 11

a surprise twist, either by fate or low ratings. Casey got the lowest score and no surprise that the judges actually use the save, even before Casey finish singing the save song. And he breaks down.

Another surprise, all top 11 are going on tour....... (Did Ryan say Pre-determined?!) felt a little bit cheated. "Pre-Determined"

Well, i guess the twist is not quite a twist afterall.

Anyway, the show is entertaining enough.

Maybe next week, we'll see a double elimination, or they should just do the charity show right off. because now is the right time to do it. and there will be another save week.

don't get me wrong, i don't think that the show should lose Casey either. And Casey breakdowns. (wonder the sudden stop in the middle of his "save" song, is because it's pre-determined, or they really don't need to listen to it(the audience does apparently since he got the lowest score, gotta win back those votes some way?), or Casey health actually is in the way?! Suspense!!!!!!!!????)

As i said, yesterday, the girls seems to have redeemed themselves(or did the producer just did another twist?) Stefano, and Casey was the underdog.

Anyway, everyone is safe, everyone is happy. top 11 still next week!

Top 11.... finally the competition is serious!!!!!

Finally there’s one show that really interest me.

Casey starts the show with a dirty-sexy tone. Right and sensual way to start the show really, well done.

Then Jacob did something right on his alley, he got the first start right, at last.

Pia finally, finally hit the right note this week. Not that she didn’t on other weeks, but they never really did shine through. This week, the voice, the tone, the tune finally catch up with each other, and u can really feel the Whitney in her.

Haley brings on the sultry Midler again. Finally, she got it right.

Naima!!!!! Naima, the song, the dance, are we seeing an African queen on stage? It’s fanstastic.

James closes the show with………. sazz. Rock the house right off it’s foundation.

Well, after all that, only this week I can feel that we are choosing the good from the great. And not the worst from the bad.

Surprise, this week, the placement is all thrown over, Pia, Naima, James, Jacob, Casey, Haley will be the top 5 from the whole lot in exactly that order. But popular wise, I wonder Pia, Naima and Haley still got the votes in them after so long didn’t peak. As for popularity I think the guys will lead the girls.

Bottom 3?!...... well it’s kinda hard to spot. Scotty did try to change then tune to suit into country, but all the higher notes just not Scotty strong suit. Thia though in the spirit but it’s a pretty bumpy ride, and Stefano though sound right, yet, the performance looks really oversell, and oversang. Lauran did the country but didn’t make it, not this time girl. Paul did a 180, still it can’t fit. Alright quit playing, popularity wise, Scotty will not be going anywhere. I think it’s gonna be Thia, Paul and Stefano, performance wise, but popularity wise I wonder the votes will totally in different. Because it is about popularity, and if it just comes down to popularity, I dun thin Haley and Naima is safe either.

This week is fun. World invasion : Battle LA

This is a funny week to play. Haha, I was with a friend that haven’t been together for 2 years, and suddenly she bring me to a concert for free. And today, a couple of the ladies that I never actually go out with before ask if I’d like to join them for dinner or movie. (Guys, don’t misunderstood. Not kinky at all. Just strange.)

Well, we went out, found a movie that fits our schedule and we went to dinner straight away.

So apparently I didn’t remember that one of their birthday falls on next weekend. As everyone is busy next week and the week after, the 2 decide to go out with me for a bit of fun. And fun it is ladies, u can come to my weekend movie marathon or simply go on some lavish dinner. Both of which we did not do. Haha, in the end we all compromise with one movie and a u-can-have-it-all dinner in the small shop by the road on the way to the movie.

What fun and relaxing can be without breaking big bucks, if you just let go of expectation and anticipation and be spontaneous sometimes.

So, we got our belly all fulled up to the brink with just 10 bucks each. Prawn, fish, Beef, Pork, Green, Salad, Chicken Wings, Thai Soup, Chicken Soup, Veitnam Pho, Eggs, wow, for 10 bucks each we really got it all going.

Anyway, back to the show. This week we of course are on to the newly released World Invasion: Battle LA.

It’s bound to be a top movie to watch. The big budget, the visual aspect and the story is compelling.

But is it really epic? The action is, the movie not really. It is essentially a more war movie than an emotional one. It takes in all the battle, the soldier story, mind frame into the story, to keep all the momentum and the suspense action going really well. The rhythm keeps the movies multiple climatic moments on top of each other well glued. But, as for emotional pressure points, director almost miss out on every opportunity to show it. because they are really brief. The whole movies really does operates as disciplined as a marine is. Just boom, after boom, after boom of climatic battle. And only rest to that a 5 second breather.

Well, it could be as epic as Saving Private Ryan or Titanic actually, if the audience can connect more with the character. Yet, the Skyline-esque beginning of the movie, tie in with battle after battle of bombing just makes is a good dance.

Anyhow, the movie is good to watch. The start of the invasion strangely resonated with the Japan’s tragedy. And I’m sure while everyone watching the movie….. they have thoughts about the crisis at one time or the other.

Sammi Cheng Concert, A HK Pop Diva. A Return, and a mesmerizing performance

I went to this concert on Saturday with a friend. (Thanks to her free tic.)

Sammi Cheng, a Hong Kong Pop Diva who’s been resting for a while and now came out with a somewhat comeback show.

I was never a real fan of Sammi Cheng. I’ve heard her songs and saw her perform on shows or TV. Never bought any of her CDs though.

Well the point is that, I have no pre-notion of what I should expect from the show as I was planning on just have some good fun time with my friend. So we went.

While I was watching the show, I was…. Somewhat struck by the fact it is actually a great show. Sammi has been on the scene for more than 2 decade and I am seeing this lady looking perfectly nice on stage dancing her ass off.

All the classics she’d sang and all the awards. Suddenly I realize that a decade before Lady Gaga walk the tour, Hong Kong already has plenty of pop diva that produce shows that’s coming out with outrageous outfits, dance like dynamite, and sang really well. The only thing different is that they are in mandarin and Cantonese. Well, that said as I was watching the show. I find that, Hong Kong Pop Diva, with all the malicious tabloid, they really have been overshadowed on their talent. Here I’m looking at a lady into her 40’s dancing as good as Lady Gaga and as natural and stylish and charming in her own way on stage.

I also thought quite right, Hong Kong been on the heel on Japan for a long time in the entertainment progress. We have pretty much well, past Western pop culture evolution a hundred times. For the reason of less resistance to change and a pretty structured growth, the only thing missing is just like Japan Currency, the money never got too much bigger. Suddenly seeing American entertainment is a bit behind which also brought into perspective that it still have a lot more spaces to grow.

Thinking back, I didn’t remember anyone as diva-ish as Sammi though after her generation of Diva.

Anita Mui, Faye Wang, all are either the same era as hers or before.

The new generation diva, though have the market on their hands, but they never truly felt as naturally charming or stylishly comfortable on stage.
